چکیده

Abstract: The portability of meter-class telescopes has been limited by the weight of the mirror, tube assembly and the mount required to provide pointing and tracking. The novel lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polymer telescopes being developed for array population at the Naval Prototype Optical Interferometer are orders of magnitude lighter than traditional telescopes. When combined with a lightweight carbon fiber mount, these telescopes will be easily transportable from one telescope station to another to change the interferometer baseline. The mount for a lightweight telescope is currently under development at Composite Mirror Applications, Inc. This paper reports on the design constraints of the mount, the scalability to larger aperture telescopes and the integration of sensors to measure the performance characteristics of this system during operation.

Modular Adaptive Optics Testbed for the Npoi

The Naval Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) is a long-baseline, multi-station interferometer whose collection apertures can be relocated to provide flexible baseline lengths. While NPOI has the longest baseline at optical wavelengths in the world, the sensitivity of the interferometer is limited by the size of the individual collection apertures which are currently 0.5 meters in diameter....

Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer observations of geosynchronous satellites.

Using a 15.9  m baseline at the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI), we have successfully detected interferometric fringes in observations of the geosynchronous satellite (geosat) DirecTV-9S while it glinted on two nights in March 2009. The fringe visibilities can be fitted by a model consisting of two components, one resolved (≳3.7  m) and one unresolved (∼1.1  m). Both the length of ...

The Navy Precision Optical Interferometer for SSA applications: an update

The Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) has been at the forefront of developing Interferometric tools for both Space Situational Awareness and astrophysical imaging. In 2009 we were the first group to attain fringes on a GEO satellite. Since then we have developed more sophisticated modelling tools and at the same time we have started to commission more and more stations. NPOI is now a...

Perspective of long baseline optical interferometry

This article is a sort of sequel of the earlier extensive review by Saha (1999a) where emphasis was laid down on the ground based single aperture, as well as on the working long baseline optical interferometers (LBI) situated at the various observatories across the globe that are producing a large amount of astronomical results. Since the future of high resolution astronomy lies with the new ge...
